Marina Silva is credited with by far the strongest environmental platform and record among the 13 candidates competing in the first round of Brazil’s presidential election. But a recent national poll shows Silva badly trailing the frontrunners ahead of the Oct. 7 contest, and thus unlikely to make it into the two-candidate runoff that will be held Oct. 28 if, as expected, no candidate wins an absolute majority of first-round votes. Meanwhile, Jair Bolsonaro, whose support in the Sept. 19 poll suggests he’ll likely win a spot in the runoff, has positioned himself as an anti-environmentalist.
